Previous course of cancer screening in the Czech Republic and its implications for treatment availability
Screening programmes for breast, colorectal and cervical cancer have been initiated in the Czech Republic. These programmes have been shown to decrease population cancer incidence and mortality. Monitoring of screening examinations has been made available in the Czech Republic by pilot project of programmes' information support. It has provided basal data on screening coverage and neoplasia detection.
In 2009, the breast cancer screening programme covered 50% of the target population (women aged 45–69 years). The same population coverage was achieved by the cervical cancer screening programme in women aged 25–59 years. Unfortunately, colorectal cancer screening by faecal occult blood test covers only 20% of males and females aged over 50 years. Without risk reduction, substantial increase in cancer incidence is expected due to population ageing, which was shown for colorectal cancer. Increase in quality of cancer screening programmes should therefore be the top priority. This particularly includes a sufficient population coverage.
